ANALYZE MAPS - SIMON

The two maps below show an island, before and after the construction of some tourist facilities. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagrams illustrate some changes to a small island which has been developed for tourism.

It is clear that the island has changed considerably with the introduction of tourism, and six new features can be seen in the second diagram. The main developments are that the island is accessible and visitors have somewhere to stay.

Looking at the maps in more detail, we can see that small huts have been built to accommodate visitors to the island. The other physical structures that have been added are a reception building, in the middle of the island, and a restaurant to the north of the reception. Before these developments, the island was completely bare apart from a few trees.

As well as the buildings mentioned above, the new facilities on the island include a pier, where boats can dock. There is also a short road linking the pier with the reception and restaurant, and footpaths connect the huts. Finally, there is a designated swimming area for tourists off a beach on the western tip of the island.

Map : Eiffel Tower in Paris

The diagrams below give information about the Eiffel Tower in Paris and an outline project to extend it underground.
Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown.

The maps illustrate the location and the structure of Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In the first map, Eiffel Tower which lies in the west of Paris is situated along the side of Seine  River. In addition, thanks to its near location close to a series of attraction sites like museums and hotels, tourists find it convenient to enjoy these services.

The second map provides a detailed picture of the structure of Eiffel Tower with its height reaching 324 meters, its weight of metal structure being around 100 thousand tons. Furthermore, five levels are designed to serve different purposes. While the fourth and fifth levels are used for parking and located at the bottom of the structure, the third and second ones provide tourists services from shopping, eating to watching cinema. The first level whose area is 57 meters is for travelers to buy tickets and access the top of tower. Strikingly, only by dint of two automatic lifts and a glass ceiling can they travel easily and watch the structure from the inside. Above these floors are viewing platforms containing 1,665 steps and uniquely created for tourists to overlook things from a high position.

Map - the development of Templeton 1990-2005

The maps describe the development of Templeton from 1990 to 2005.

In general, the village experienced several noticeable changes with the disappearance of trees and the construction of new structures after 15 years.

To specify, before the appearance of a series of big buildings and small houses near the bridge in the second period,  the northwest area saw the existence of numerous trees in the first period. Similarly, in the northeast, trees were demolished, followed by the birth of an airport in 2004. However, a lake in the northwest, a school as well as hospital in the northeast stayed unchanged over the years.

By comparison, the rate of change in the south was faster. For example, although there were various trees and small houses in 1990, there were all destroyed and a series of big buildings and a supermarket, factory came into being here through time. Strikingly, only by dint of the birth of a railway did traveling in the south become easier.

In brief, the village become less environment- friendly but more modern over the years.

Map : the town of Garlsdon

The map below is of the town of Garlsdon. A new supermarket (S) is planned for the town. The map shows two possible sites for the supermarket.

The map describes two possible market locations S1 and S2. In general, two locations have their own advantages and disadvantages.

On one hand, from the map, S1 is far from the housing, industry and other living areas, which proves inconvenient for people. However, thanks to the appearance of main roads and railway that run through the location, it is still accessible to people. Besides, in the long term, when population grows, this location is expandable since it is located in a large countryside.

On the other hand, S2 which is situated right next to a series of living areas with less than 25 kilometers far away and a population rate of above forty thousand is seen as greatly beneficial in travelling. Those in city center will find it convenient as well, yet due to no traffic zone requirement by the authority and limited space, residents around here may be less willing to come. In the future, for the purpose of extension, it is, hence, less advantageous than S1.
