should children study or relax more?

ĐỀ 14-01-2013
Children are expected to spend a lot of time studying both in and after school and have a little time to relax. Does this have positive and negative effects on children and our society?

Pros
- Away from social evils
- Concentrate on learning and pursuing knowledge
- Good for future career
- Keep up with knowledge-based society

Cons
- Affect their health
- Lose their focus (learning too much)
- Lack practical sense
- Lose their childhood

Whether children should focus more on learning after their school periods remains controversial. Some believe that this has positive effects on their future while others claim that this may put their health in danger. My essay will discuss both positive and negative effects of children’s learning more and having little time to relax

First, it is argued that their concentration on learning through the day is conducive to their avoidance of social evils. Facts have shown that there are children obsessed with playing games online during their free time and going astray. Nevertheless, without free time after school, it is undeniable that children will suffer growing stress and lose their great interest in learning. To some extent, to stifle such mental burden, they are vulnerable to being addicted to games, though.

Second, to have a better career future, children should divert their attention to learning more rather than relaxation. In a knowledge-based society like today, if lacking savvy, children find it hard to seek a job and gain respect from others. Yet, being amidst the ocean of knowledge and forced to learn too much, they are likely to forfeit their real goal and have little idea about what they are going to do with their life. Sometimes, the knowledge taught at school remains theoretical, making children lose practical sense and become inactive. Besides, should their life be all about cramming their heads with knowledge, even after school period? To have a balanced life, they are supposed to join in extra-curriculum activities with friends where they themselves accumulate necessary social skills and intelligence. Even worse, as a result of studying long periods, several children go isolated and weird among their circle of friends.

In the final analysis, I think that apart from classes, children should be strongly given a period of enjoying their life with recreational and healthy outside activities, so as to gain a comprehensive education

-             Go astray (v) lầm đường lạc lối
-         Cram (v) nhồi nhét – cram their heads with knowledge
-         Curricula (pl: curriculum) (n) chương trình giảng dạy
-         Divert their attention (v) hướng sự chú ý
-         Forfeit their goal (v) mất đi mục tiêu
-         Stift /’staifl/ (v) làm ngột ngạt, đàn áp, kiềm chế
